Review:

positive number means the left side (1st number) or the top (2nd number).

negative number means the right side (1st number) or the bottom (2nd number).

D: Crop a Section from Inside an Image:

Here is a black and white version of our example image. We're going to crop out a piece from inside the image, represented by the colored area.

Taking a section from inside the image and discarding much of the image outside this smaller section requires some careful subtraction.

The size of the image is 459x350. In the parameter box, we'll need the Size of the finished section (232x218) plus the coordinates (offsets) from the Left Side and Top where the crop is to Start (+85+115). The whole parameter we type in will look like this:

232x218+85+115

Again we'll use the same example image.

Input the image. With the cursor around the image, click once. Decide where you want the Upper Left corner of the small section to be. Using the arrow keys, move the cursor arrow to that spot and click again.

Write down the two numbers to the left, below the image: 85,115.

85 from the Left side: 115 from the Top.

Put the cursor around the image again and click once. Decide where you want the Lower Right corner of the small section to be. Using the arrow keys, move the cursor arrow to that spot and click again.

Write down the two numbers to the left, below the image: 317,323.

317 from the Left side: 323 from the Top.

DOING THE MATH

We already have the 3rd and 4th numbers for the parameter box: +85+115. But now we need to know the size of the finished crop (the 1st and 2nd numbers).

Width of image minus the first offset from the Left Side (Upper Left corner):

459 - 85 = 374.

Height of image minus first offset from the Top (Upper Left corner):

350 - 115 = 235

Width of image minus second offset from Left Side (Lower Right corner):

459 - 317 = 142

Height of image minus second offset from Top (Lower Right corner):

350 - 323 = 17

The two widths: 374 minus 142 equals 232 (the width of the cropped piece).

The two heights: 235 minus 17 equals 218 (the height of the cropped piece).

So now just type in the finished size of the piece to be cropped: 232x218 with the (first) offsets from the Left Side and Top (Upper Left corner): +85+115

232x215+85+115

Click the radio button beside Crop. Click the square "reset page geometry." And Click on the Transform button.

Result

Measurements is a graphic showing how to do the measuring
and the position of the cropped piece within the original dimensions.

Remember: We are limited only by our own imaginations.

REMOVE FROM INSIDE, LEAVE THE OUTSIDE

Even though you're removing a rectangle from inside an image, you can not do it using either Crop or Chop. You must use the "Out" in Composite.

To do this, make a white or black xc bg. Size it to the width and height of the area you want to remove from an image. Output and save.

Input the image. Click on the Composite tab.

Enter the url of the xc into the composite box. Change the offsets and the gravity to suit your purposes.

From the Composite drop down menu, choose "Out" and then click on the Compose button.

Result image 429x370. "Out" area: 230x230. Offset: +20+20. Gravity: Northeast.

Now you can click on the "Out" area and Paint it so it is transparent (Fuzz: 999; Method: Floodfill; Color Type: matte), if desired.

Output as a gif; Image Type: Truecolormatte. OR if no transparency, as a jpeg; Image Type: Truecolor.

CHOP AS OPPOSED TO CROP

With Chop, we can remove a horizontal or vertical slice
from an image and the two remaining parts will merge
seamlessly. For the how to, please consult
