SCALE

An Image Magick Tute by Flo

Scale uses a simpler resizing algorithm than Resize and Sample do. This results in a rougher result. Imagers can take advantage of this by using Scale to pixelate an image so it can be used either as a frame for its original, or as a background for another image or a webpage. The steps are very simple to create this effect:

  1. Take an original image to Resize. Write down its dimensions. Delete them and type in 10%.

  2. Click on the radio button next to Scale. Click on Resize button below the rest of the choices.

  3. When you see the tiny image, click on the Resize tab again.

  4. Delete its dimensions and type in the original dimensions.

  5. The radio button next to Scale will be red. Just click on Resize at the bottom.

  6. Now you'll see the large image looking quite pixelated. Resize it to any dimensions you desire, but this time click on the radio button next to Resize. Then click on Resize below.

If you make a gradient background from scratch, you can emphasize the horizontal color gradations by doing the Resize/Scale process outlined above.
