This tutorial combines tools from Image Magick and Dave's Tools.
A. Composite-Rotate-Bgcolor:
- Make, output and save a clear gif the size of the image you want to paint. Or use this clear gif, size 400x400.
- Input a black-and-white image into Image Magick. I chose this iris.
- Select the Composite tab and click.
- Enter the url of the clear gif into the box.
- Select Multiply from the dropdown menu; Gravity = center.
- Below for Rotate, change the 0.0 to 0.01. You must do a very small amount of Rotate to have the background color show up.
- Type in the predominant color you want to paint the image. I used coral.
- Click on the Composite button.

B. Colormap
- Now click on the Colormap tab.
- Leave number of colors at 256.
- Uncheck Dither.
- Check Posterize.

C. Paint - optional
- Posterizing probably has given a few other subtle colors to work with. But if you wish to introduce another color or 2, then paint them in at this time. Fuzz: 999 or higher; Method: Replace; Paint Type = color; Fill Color = color name or #hex. I chose indigo.
- Put cursor around image. Move arrow to the part you want to paint. Click.
- Repeat, changing the settings as needed.
- Click on Paint when you are finished.

D. Resize-Blur
- The example image is 313x417. Set the size to 315x419! (remember to add the exclamation point.) This is 2 pixels wider and 2 higher than the original.
- Leave the radio button red by Resize. Scroll down and change Support to 3 or 5 or 7, depending on how much blur you want. Leave the rest as is.
- Click on the Resize button below the radio buttons.
- Output as a jpeg; single file; Image Type = Truecolor; Interlace = plane; Quality = 100 (I use 100 until I get to the final image. Then I reduce the quality, if it is too large.) Save in your File Manager.

E. Dave's Tools
- Put the manipulated image url into your Find key. Carry the url of the Original b&w image in your memory.
- Go to: Dave's Image Blender-Dissolver by Percentage
- Paste the Original url onto the top blue line. Paste the url of the manipuated image (in your Find key) onto the next blue line.
- VERY IMPORTANT: Delete the name in the next box and type in an original name. This is so you will get your own result instead of Dave's default.
- Select Gravity = center.
- Percent background image = 70 (or 60)
- Percent of overlay image = 30 (or 40)
- Click on Blend. Check image on next page.
- Hit your Back key. Now click on Dissolve. Check image again.
- If you like Dissolve better, then save it. If you like Blend better, Back up and click on Blend again.
- To save an image, click on the image. You will see the image on a black background. Use your Go To key to get its temporary url, just like you would do at Image Magick. Save image in your File Manager.
Result This was the Dissolve, as it showed the subtle colors better.
OTHER EXAMPLES
Remember, we are limited only by our own imaginations.
I am indebted to Nancy Quayle, Bev, and Moondogee, whose paint tutes inspired me to combine several methods.
