an Image Magick Tute by Flo

A. Paint-Reset a la Tiger Lily:

  1. Input an image into the Image Magick of your choice. Best to use a color image with a central figure and not very much detail in the background.

  2. On the View page, scroll down. Choose Method-Reset and Paint Type-Color. Fill Color - type in either a color name or hex code.

  3. Pace cursor around image and click two times.

  4. The next screen will show you a rectangle the size of your image, but replacing your image will be the color you have chosen.

    Example

  5. Click on the Composite tab at the top.

  6. Paste the url of your original image into the proper box. Select Gravity - center. Click on the drop down menu and choose Difference. Click on the Compose button.

    Example

B. Resize-Composite a la Flo:

Here's where we depart from the rest of Tiger Lily's tutorial.

  1. Click on the Resize tab.

  2. Change the size to 2 pixels larger for both width and height. Remember to use the exclamation point after the numbers.

    EX: Original image - 266x409 - Resize to 268x411!

  3. Scroll to Options. In the Support box, delete what's there and type in 5. This will produce a small amount of blur. Leave everything else as is.

  4. Click on the Resize button.

    Example

  5. On the View screen, click on the Composite tab again.

  6. Change only the filter in the drop down menu, to Luminize. Click on the Compose button.

    Example

  7. On the View screen, again click on Resize. Again increase the width and height by 2 pixels and include the exclamation point:

    268x411 becomes 270x413!

  8. In the Support box, change the 5 to 9. Leave everything else as is and click on the Resize button.

    Example

  9. View screen, choose the Composite tab once again.

  10. For the final composite, choose Plus from the drop down menu. Click on the Compose button.

NOTE: If your final result turns out to be too dark or too light, back up and click on the Enhance tab:

If too light, choose Saturation at 150.
If too dark, choose Brightness at 150.

Then do the final Plus composite.

    Example resized & finished.

Now you may decorate or otherwise finish your image. If you Resize again, remember to change the Support number back to 1.0.

I do all my jpeg Outputs as single file, Image Type - Truecolor, Interlace - line, Quality - 80. I also type in my ID and date in the Comments box, and check the "strip image of any contents..." box.

Remember, we are limited only by our own imaginations.

I am indebted to Tiger Lily whose Painted Composite tute inspired me to combine her method with mine.

This method works well with b&w images. But here's a different slant on using Reset with b&w mages, Ms V's B&W Glow tute.
