JS BUG! PLEASE RELOAD
an Image Magick Tute by Flo

INTRODUCTION
Many thanks go to Chocolataa's Dot Toning Tute for this idea. Choco converted a Paint Shop Pro tute on Dot Toning to an Image Magic tute, so we can get similar effects. Her tute involves three steps and gives a graduated light-to-dark effect.

Knowing that Bilevel in Output converts a color image to black and white with dots replacing the middle tones, I decided to use a Bilevel Output of an image composited with its color original. These results are similar, but do not show the finer graduations from light to dark that Choco's technique does.
MAKING A BILEVEL
Here's the original. Note that it has light, medium and darker shades. This makes it an ideal candidate for Bilevel treatment.
The Output as a Bilevel Image Type: note the dots in place of the midtones, while the dark shades go black and the lightest go white.
The finished result. Composite with the Original was Lighten.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Input an image into Image Magick.

  2. Output: single file; Image Type = Bilevel; Interlace = Plane. Save to your File Manager.

  3. Put url for Bilevel image into your Find key.

  4. Input original image back into IM.

  5. Click on Composite.

  6. Paste the Bilevel url into the box.

  7. Try various composites: Darken, Lighten, Luminize, etc.

  8. When you get a composite that you like, finish and save your usual way.

NOTE: If you try to composite the other way, with the Bilevel input and the composite being the original, many times the dots will not show up!
