Sometimes a monochrome gray or black and white image will have too much contrast. The details in the shadows will be lost. If the information is still embedded in the image's codes, though, we can open those shadows up to expose more details.

Look at the dense dark shadows in the above image. Let's see if we can open them up.
- Input image into the Image Magick of your choice.
- Enhance: choose Brightness @ 300. This is a starting point. You might have to go to 450 to see any detail in the shadows. If after 450, there is still no detail, then the image doesn't have enough info in its shadows.
Now the shadows have opened, but the highlights are totally wiped out.
- Scroll below to the Paint Option. Select Fuzz @ 7000; Replace; Color Type = "Matte." Click on image and move arrow to one of the white areas. Click again.
- Output as a gif; single file; Image Type = "TruecolorMatte" and copy the temporary url..
- Back up one screen. Click on the Input tab. You'll see the url for the original image there. Click on View
- Select Composite from the top tabs. Copy and paste the gif's temporary url into the composite box. Click on Composite.
