Identify is a useful feature that reveals the number of colors, the image type, interlacing, comments and other aspects of any particular image loaded into any IM. Access Identify along the tabs at the top of the View or any other IM page.
Let's use this image:
This seems to be a black and white image, right?
After entering the url at the IM of your choice, click on the Identify tab. You'll see lots of information and much of it looks confusing and not at all what you want to know.
First useful info: 6th line down - Type: TrueColor
But this looks like a black and white, right?
Look down past the Channel depth and Channel statistics. Find Colors: 5896. So this is really a color image.
Other useful info: Filesize: 338 b (my FM says 27.4 kb); Interlace: none; Quality: 90; Signature: you can ignore all the sig stuff.
Make note of the Quality. You might want to output your version at 100, or 50, or 35 or so. The Quality of this original is already pretty high: 90 percent.
Now, using the info that this image is a TrueColor and has 5896 colors, I could then bring back the colors that had been desaturated.
Click on the Enhance tab.
Enter 200 in the box and click on the radio button for Saturation. With this image I repeated the 200 Saturation 2 more times. Each time the colors showed more intensity. The final result is below
Let's take the finished image to IM and Identify it.
Now the Colors have jumped to 43119 and the Filesize is 400 b (my FM says 21.7 kb). Of course I did add 2 colored borders and a frame, so that's where some of those colors came from.
One last item: Look down near the bottom and above the Signature. Now you'll see Comment: Imaging by Tone By Tone Dot Net December 17, 2006. This is the comment I added during the output process. Sometimes the artist or photographer has added a comment, so you can find out who made the image.
