The "Orton" effect produces a dreamy cloud of color around all the figures and subjects in an image. For the background and explanation of this photographic effect, please click here.

To produce this effect is a simple, three-step process at Image Magick:

  1. Effects/Median Filter @ 5, 7, or 9
This produces a slight to heavy blur of the medium tones.

  2. Enhance/Gamma @ 2.0,2.0,2.0
This will lighten the whole image.

  3. Composite with the original. For this try Darken, Luminize, Overlay, or Screen.
You will have to try them to see which one gives you the effect you want.
    • Darken: makes colors of the original full strength.

    • Luminize: subdues some or all of the colors.

    • Overlay: emphasizes some colors while de-emphasizing others.

    • Screen: softens and reduces intensity of all colors.
