The "Orton" effect produces a dreamy cloud of color around all the figures and subjects in an image. For the background and explanation of this photographic effect, please click here.
To produce this effect is a simple, three-step process at Image Magick:
- Effects/Median Filter @ 5, 7, or 9
This produces a slight to heavy blur of the medium tones.
- Enhance/Gamma @ 2.0,2.0,2.0
This will lighten the whole image.
- Composite with the original. For this try Darken, Luminize, Overlay, or Screen.
You will have to try them to see which one gives you the effect you want.
- Darken: makes colors of the original full strength.
- Luminize: subdues some or all of the colors.
- Overlay: emphasizes some colors while de-emphasizing others.
- Screen: softens and reduces intensity of all colors.
