Xor is one of the optional attributes in Composite that has had many imagers baffled as to how to use it. Mostly the results were just a black blank image instead of showing any details. This is because we didn't rotate the image first before compositing it with itself. Xor does work on square images, providing that we use the regular Rotate @ 25% or 40% or whatever angle works best. To use Xor with either Rotate Left or Rotate Right, one dimension of the image must be longer than the other dimension: a rectangle.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Input a rectangular imagine into IM.

  2. Transform - RotateLeft or RotateRight. You can also use Rotate @ 10, 60 or other. The title image was made using Rotate at 10.

  3. Comp/Xor with original; gravity=center, background=none. You'll get a black center with the two ends of the image that were longer showing on each end of the black area! If you use the Rotate instead and specify the color of the background, then you'll get the bg colored center instead of the black center.

  4. Transform - Rotate in opposite direction.

  5. Composite - explore which ones will now give you an effect you like. Darken usually won't show anything in the black area.

If you used Rotate, you will have to crop off the excess background at this point.

EXAMPLES:
Original Xor Result
Original Xor Result
The two images above were made using Rotate Left, background=none. So the Xor bgs are black.
Original Xor Result
The image above was made using Rotate @ 10, background=white. So instead of black, the center is white. The final composite was Bumpmap. Then I used Enhance/Saturation @ 200.

And last, here's how I used the image above to make another finished image:
